John Smith from Atheist Society Writes About Sikhism:Dear Ali, please help us. We were very impressed with your website and agreed that religion in general is no longer needed, we can all be humanistic and live in peace and harmony. We are in the process of making a website which will hopefully help to destroy the religious doctrines which divide humanity. We were doing great with knocking out Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Baha’i, even Buddhism but we have gotten very stuck with Sikhism. This religion is (to put it nicely) “a big pain in the ass” (Please pardon the language) We have only found one site which tries (very poorly) to argue that even this religion is not needed, but the argument is irrational and very unscientific unlike the very rational arguments you use. When we read the following from your website, we found what you said to be amazingly interesting:

“Doubt Everything Find Your Own Light.”

“Last Words Dear friend, if you look for meaning in life, don’t look for it in religions; don’t go from one cult to another or from one guru to the next. You can expend all your life or look for eternity and will find nothing but disappointment and disillusionment. Look instead in service to humanity. You will find “meaning” in your love for other human beings. You can experience God when you help someone who needs your help. The only truth that counts is the love that we have for each other. This is absolute and real. The rest is mirage, fancies of human imagination and fallacies of our own making.” By Ali Sina

Why is this interesting? Because we found this religion of Sikhism to be in agreement with you! This is why we have a problem. We tried to look at their holy text (Adi Granth) but didnt find the usual absurdities we found in the other religious books. In fact its refreshingly inspiring and very good!? Maybe you can have some better luck.

We tried to visit a couple of websites and got more of a shock. Did you know that they believed in Democracy, freedom of speech, choice, expression, freedom of religion, pluralism, human rights, equality between men and women, equality of all people regardless of race, religion, caste, creed, status etc. 300 years before the existance of the USA! Theirs is the only religion which says in their religious scriptures that women are equal in every respect to men. They even had women soldiers leading armies in to battle against “you know who” (The usual suspects – Muslims!) Their history is a proud one, they fought in both World Wars. Even Hitler praised them for their bravery and Aryan heritage! Dear Ali, this religion is hard for us to try and criticise but you are an expert and may find some faults overlooked by us. In their holy book, there is a round earth, water is made from chemical elements, there is even mention of the evoution process, big bang and life on other planets! This is pretty crazy and amazing stuff, who would have thought that these New York taxi drivers (There are lots of Sikh taxi drivers in NY) would have such an amzing faith? We read up some information of what Bertrand Russell had to say about Sikhism, this is the man who destroyed Christianity (same applies to Islam and Judaism) and exposed its absurdities, but even this great man got stuck when it came to Sikhism! In fact he gave up and said “that if some lucky men survive the onslaught of the third world war of atomic and hydrogen bombs, then the Sikh religion will be the only means of guiding them. Russell was asked that he was talking about the third world war, but isn’t this religion capable of guiding mankind before the third world war? In reply, Russell said, “Yes, it has the capability, but the Sikhs have not brought out in the broad daylight, the splendid doctrines of this religion which has come into existence for the benefit of the entire mankind. This is their greatest sin and the Sikhs cannot be freed of it.”

Please bear in mind that Bertrand Russell was a great philosopher and free thinker. We have been trying for weeks now to find a way to fairly and rationally criticize and find fault with this religion but have failed. We even found out that there are many people converting to this religion in the USA and Europe as well as Russia (Mostly well educated and affluent white people). We tried to find some of their literature and see what kind of claims they make, but unfortunatley they have no missionary material as they do not have missionsaries! People become Sikh by learning usually by chance or by coming in to contact with them. They are currently the 5th biggest religion in the world and growing quite fast in the west and Russia. Please help us as we are stuck, to give you an example of they are all about we found the following websites:  http://www.hope.at/sikhism (This site is very easy to follow, check it out, they have a Womans section and a Martyrs section, it looks like that you are not the only one trying to expose the falseness of Islam, Sikhs scholars did it hundreds of years ago and got killed for it!) http://www.sikhs.org (This is the site that was on CNN when Sikhs in the USA were mistaken for Arabs and Middle Easterners and were attacked by mindless morons)

Please help us out, we cant make our website about religion being the cause of war and disharmony when we have this one and only religion which makes a hell of a lot of sense! lol (I thought Atheism had all the answers but were kind of stuck now.) We look forward to hearing from you, we respect your great views and want to promote them to everyone, thank you for your time, take care.

Right On! I remind my fellow Sikhs that the very best time in history is always right NOW!

Can someone find this Bertrand Russell reference?

    Hi Kamalla
I agree we are sinners for not sharing the faith, I personally welcome if someone joins my path and most sikhs will welcome new travellers on the way but there are some sikhs who do not even want to think of non punjabi sikhs, they think they own sikhi because it originated amongst their ancesters so finders keepers sort of thing but sikhi is more universal

    • Amandeep Singh

Very true jeetan its among the various sikhs that this “Precious” gift is given to them by God via their ancestors but This is a universal religion which talks about Humanity and Faith in One God.
We can do one thing whenever i meet any guy having the same thoughts then by Gods Grace I share the lines from Guru Granth Sahib “Pothi Parmeshar Ka Thaan” and “Gur Parmeshwar Eko Jaan”. The First line means The Guru Granth Sahib is the Book of God and it Speaks of the countless virtues of God, second line means that Guru i.e. Guru Granth Sahib and Parmeshwar means God are same there is no difference between them. So this means that Sikhs are fortunate that they have this Treasure which they got from their ancestors but this is for all the people all over the world and not restricted to the Sikhs only.
Hope it helps and please share any thing related to this with all of us.

Sikhi, or Sikhism, was intended by its founder, Guru Nanak, to be a ‘Universal Faith’. There is a problem with Punjabi Sikh ‘Purity Police’ making it difficult for non-Punjabi/Indians to practice Sikhi with any cultural or linguistic alterations.. I am a Caucasian Western Sikh, will become Khalsa, but I recommend to anyone to go to a Gurdwara, you will be accepted with open arms — you must experience the power and beauty of Kirtan, Gurbani, etc.

    Sat Nam!

    Dear Sir/Madam

as someone who is on a Spiritual journey involving the Darbar Saheb and some EXTRAORDINARY and AMAZING things happening with my lowly self, things with no rational answers. I believe this page should be made available to everyone on EARTH…it can silence and more importantly, embarrass everyone who rigidly and arrogantly follows the so called religions based on mindless and senseless dogma and blatant discrimination and the anger and hatred and violence which goes along with it…please note : none of the founders of the ‘religions’ contributed to their respective scriptures and there is no evidence to suggest they were literate ( the GURUS were educated )…so all this chaos of discrimination and exclusivity and violence is happening over a mistake !… may we say this as followers of GURU NANAK , to all Homo Sapiens on Earth.

  5. Huh. As an atheist anti-theist, I must say I know jack about Sikhi, but I’m intrigued. (I’m not one to follow any religion, but I can probably find appealing quotes and it’ll be great to use as a comparison for Christians and Mormons I debate!)

    • Hari

I think, that, Guru Naanak started Sikhism while he was challenging the age old, well trodden and established beliefs. Seekh means education, to study. And that by definition means a continuous capability absorb new ideas and to not believe in the status quo :). It means exploring new things :).

Sikhism started getting distorted when Jutts (land owners & farmers) from punjab started joining this religion during the British Rule.
Don’t get me wrong… I am also a Jutt (spelled as Jatt as well). They brought along with them the hindu practices as well. Also, Jatts as a race were always brave fighters and land owners but a rebellious lot. They pushed all other Sikhs to the periphery. And it is this rebellious nature, I think, is distorting the hell out of this religion.

      • Singh

        Dear Hari,
I think its wrong on your part to blame Jatts as the one who corrupted religion. I think your knowledge on Jatts come from present day TV. They were not only brave fighters but devout sikhs too. Baba Budha ji, Baba Deep Singh ji!! Jatts as a person were very straight people, always occupied with their fields. All those written by Jatts have been written by other castes. They are known for replying slap with fist. They were blunt, honest in opinion which may offend others. Hence, negative opinions on Jatts. Other major caste in Sikhs, Khatri Sikhs also reffered as “Bhapas” are known to be cunning and materialistic people as they usually happen to be traders or merchants. So how come, they have not distorted Sikhism.Greed and treachery are sins, last time I read about Sikhism. Its not about caste buddy. You and me, bringing the caste issue in Sikhism itself show how corrupt we have become.
Present day Sikhs, lets not talk about it. Doesn’t matter where they belong, they are corrupted.

      • Baldev Singh

        Dear Singh

THE HOUSE OF NANAK-GOBIND SINGH is without Caste and the evil of Caste is seen in virtually every single South Asian Household (with almost 2,000,000,000 South Asians on the Planet [ that’s the largest single group of Humans! ] affected…Sikhs have failed mainly through superstition and tribalism to tackle this greatest insult to GURU NANAK first and the KHALSA second…South Asian Corruption has its routes in Hinduism and Islam and we have seen on Television decade after decade millions of abject poor Indians,Pakistanis and Bangladeshis wandering the streets with little or no money or hope( yet Sikhs so succsssful, despite divisions) and no one to feel pity on them because of CASTE and the hatred and discrimination which comes with it with the blessings of the BRAHMINIC Clergy of these so called religions and the brainwashed followers…There is good news however because in our Household there is NO Caste and we celebrate the Birth of the Female! two traits and virtues i am told are impossible in any South Asian Household…So reading the Gurbani with full faith and conviction and following the GURU is not that difficult if you understand the GURU and what the GURU says about superstition, magic, mindless and senless rituals Sexism,Dowry and of course EGOTISM! a commidity in abundance with South Asians…Please repeat this message from a lowly me! that ”THERE IS NO CASTE IN SIKHISM and THE HOUSE OF NANAK” and whatever the pressure to resort to Caste, it is futile spiritually, and destructive to the victims and extremely bad for the perpetrators of this Crime against Humanity and Common Sense.

  6. kamallarosekaur

    Welcome Angie,

Sikhs are monists. How do anti-theists relate to monists? Creator and Creation are One. Sikhs believe that everything coming to you, into your life is God (God as a verb, not a noun).Your life-movie is different from mine, but we share this moment together.

Sikhs relationship to the All-That-Is is personal and intimate – best friend, Beloved.

I asked the Sikh Guru (scripture, the Siri Guru Granth Sahib) what i should say to you (in the traditional Sikh way) and got the following message from Guru Arjan, fifth teacher in the Sikh lineage, who lived in the 1500s.

“I abandoned and lost my Beloved Friend, O Nanak; I was fooled by the transitory color of the safflower, which fades away. I did not know Your value, O my Friend; without You, I am not worth even half a shell.”.- page 963 Siri Guru granth Sahib

  7. ME

ok I’m having a proud to be sikh moment! It is quite magical -this religion..perhaps thats why only a few are born to it and even fewer appreciate it?

  8. Hari

I am a Punjabi Sikh. And I know that the religious sevadars, the priests and the punjabi politicians have made it very difficult to practice sikhi the right way.

They think that their age old rural beliefs are the right way. Most of the times they are ignorant and wrong and have NO IDEA about the liberal religion that Guru Naanak’s sikhism was (or is).

The best way I see is to ignore these religious bigots and form our own North American Gurdwaras which are free from the rural-punjabi domination. And let people experience the true Sikhi which is based on freedom, seva, racial equality, gender equality, and love for all.

    Cheers, Hari

    • Baldev Singh

The religion of religions is the yearning for the Divine and the Purity of deeds ( SGGS P 266 ) The House of Nanak is the most successful HOUSE in the history of Humankind, where everyone is fed and for the first time Woman is equal and exalted by Guru Nanak on page 473 of SGGS…The People you describe Hari are not just rural people but more correctly are BRAMHANIC in their psyche of rigid mindless and senseless rituals and ceremonies based on sexism and superstition…Worship in and out of Gurudwaras becomes ‘mechanical’ so the BRAMHANIC / HINDU CASTE SYSTEM, SEXISM,RACISM,COLOUR PREJUDICE,DOWRY,BOY CHILD,SUPERSTITION,MAGIC,KARMA,RITUALS,CEREMONIES,’PREVIOUS LIVES’ ETC are difficult to remove from most families, generation after generation, a bit like the ‘endless cycle’ the GURU JI tells us about…The quickest way out of this cycle is to attach yourself to the NAAM SHABAD ( the beauty of the poetry AND the meaning, which is contained in the Sri Guru Granth Saheb Ji) ie.the GURU JI tells us that the people we are attached to or the living beings around us, crumble and disentegrate before our eyes and this causes distress to a lot of people but to a GURMUKH it is AWESOME because to win the game of life is to not just to accept this as TRUE but to fall in love with the ‘being’ which causes this TRUTH…And only through LOVE can this ‘being’ be attained.

  9. Ravipal Singh

As much as I am proud of being a Sikh and follower of Guru Nanak, I feel it is a disservice to the Sikhs by publishing articles like this. I have researched and found no evidence to validate authenticity of this letter. We as Sikhs know how great our faith is, but reading it from an agnostic’s point of view, this is pure propaganda. A non-sikh who reads this might be impressed initially, but would certainly get a bad impression of Sikhism, when he or she finds that this article is not authentic.

    • Baldev Singh

      Dear Ravipal Singh

this article contains true observations regardless of its authenticity, it contains the fulcrum of what the House of Nanak-Gobind Singh’s new ageless reform movement is. This message has not been shared by the Caste and Hindu-custom orientated Punjabis. The author is shocked ! and is replying to Ali Sinha, who is a former muslim who argues that Islam is an unacceptable ideology as indeed is all religion. To Guru Nanak all religions are irrelevant without LOVE and SELFLESS SERVICE to HUMANITY…The Author is saying what he has discovered in the Gurbani and we know about this already ( Japji Saheb is a synopsis of the Sri Guru Granth Saheb ) and the Sikh struggles against Islam are extraordinary and Islam is being vilified more than ever before globally and Sikhs are respected more and more with the advent of universal access to knowledge…We owe a debt to the Guru Roop Khalsa for our extraordinary freedoms and Royal Titles of ‘Lion’ and ‘Princess’ and as forces of 46 countries take on the Taliban in Afghanistan and are getting nowhere, the forces of Sikh General Hari Singh Nalwa defeated the Afghans so easily in 1834! and Al Qaeda and the wider Muslim world has not dared to take on the ‘biggest non-believers’ the Sikhs…Articles like this are good for freedom of speech and to find out what is actually in the Scriptures of the Sikhs ie…The CREATOR BEING, a being so intelligent that Guru Nanak says we haven’t got the intelligence to imagine this being. It is the master and the servant, we are insignificant to it, it can create trillions of galaxies in an instant! where would you and i start to make a sun ? let alone a trillion galaxies! or a beautiful EARTH for practicing Truth, Equality and Love for the entire creation.

  10. kamallarosekaur

    Hi Ravipal Singh,

Actually I come form a family of academic agnostics and atheists. Many intelligent people in the West associate religion with believing hard to believe stuff. They are not Christian, nor Jew, nor Muslim and proud of it.

That said, I too have never found that B. Russell quote about Sikhs yet. Too bad if it doesn’t exist – still hope it does.

Have you read my husband? https://kamallarosekaur.wordpress.com/2008/03/02/usa-seeker-marries-usa-sikh/ Please share you comments with him.

  11. Jaspal Singh

    WaheGuruJiKaKhalsa WaheGuruJiKiFateh.

I was born and nobody told me what is my Religion. One fine day while filling form for academic purpose I came across word ‘Religion’ for first time in my life and I was thunderstruck.

Ques.) Why I got Thunderstruck ?
Ans.) My family had taught me that by taking birth in a family of Scholar you cannot become Scholar, by taking birth in a family of Painter you cannot become Painter. Similarly by taking birth in Sikh family you cannot become Sikh. We can show you the path which Our Gurus have shown us, You practice it You become Sikh. And this is the basic Dictum.

The word ‘Religion’ has been misused so much that it has become dirty with passing time. It is stinking and its odour is corrupting heart+mind; which were suppose to bloom like flower and had compassion in it.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji told me that Religion is suppose to be Personal Practice that is why it should be your ‘Sikhi Sidak’. He also told me that in coming time People are bound to be Delusion-ed, hence I am creating Khalsa. You are suppose to Stand Out and Not Fit in among Delusion-ed. He said, “Shanka Na Karyo Singho”, Practice it Purely and I will come Myself to receive You when it’s time for You to come back Home.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji took Pir’s son of Baghdad and showed him “LAKH AKASHA AKASH, LAKH PATAALA PATAAL”.
He explained to the people of Baghdad that Prophet Mohammad had also spoken Truth. The difference is very small, He had capacity to see TEN worlds and I just see LAKHS instead of TEN.

People only talk big, they never stake anything. Whether God is or is Not, it is Not truly their concern. It is a mental exercise, an intellectual entertainment for them. And they remain untransformed whether God does exist or does not.

    Dear S Jaspal Singh
I trust this communication finds you deeply engrossed in a state of high intensity of LOVE
OF INFINITE BLISS OF NAAM . NAAM is
the light of LOVE OF TRUTH ABSOLUTE .

It will be nice if you appreciate that one
should start his life in the world , after
    finishing the University education phase,
only after having experienced THE INFINITE
BLISS to MIND & HEART both . Or
in other words , you have discovered who
are you & how you have to live a fearless
& yet a life journey of LOVE as also play
a role of giver & not seeker /beggar. This
is a blissful way of life & a process of
learning to enjoy a direct contact with GOD/SATGURU NANAK DEV JI MAHARAJ, during amrit vela (0400hrs to 0700hrs). For consolidation of strength of
oneself forever one must read the BLISSFUL
JOURNEY OF LIFE OF BABA NAND SINGH JI
written by BHAI GURMUKH SINGH JI ,
    NANAKSAR , LUDHIANA , PUNJAB , INDIA.

The above is guarentted by GURU GOBIND
SINGH JI MAHARAJ , to HIS SON , instantly
after taking AMRIT ,as desired /directed by
HIM , since HE enjoyed the SUPER POWERS
OF LOVE OF GOD & had the authority to dilute
all regulations of getting INFINITE BLISS
OF NAAM , for living a soldiering way of life
i.e SAINT SOLDIERING . For details , kindly
refer the LIFE OF BABA NAND SINGH JI.

For dear DR JOHN SMITH , I feel honoured
to mention that you have already travelled a
lot in the direction of getting/enjoying THE
LOVE OF LORD JESUS CHRIST . I wish to share
my concern with him that how does he view
the most serious problem of stoping the further
suicidal actions (over 500 US MARINES are
already victims of that error ) of the US ARMY,
who return from IRAQ WAR & suffer depression.
I did enjoy a meeting with LORD JESUS CHRIST
surrounded by US MARINES MARTYRS of
IRAQ WAR , in the early morning vission but
later was shocked to read the above news in
our daily DANIK BHASKAR NEWS PAPER.

Can we put in our joint efforts to ensure nonrecurrence of above action of US MARINES
in future, if we have TRUE LOVE for them.

    With GOD’S LOVE to all

  13. Nonsensei

Hello. I am an atheist. A real one. I was also born into the cult of Sikhism and was subjected to horrible experiences at a very young age thanks to this farce of a religion.

As an Atheist I feel compelled to tell you plainly that there is nothing special about Sikhism. All the reasons other religions are useless and divisive, Sikhism shares. It has unsupported claims of spiritualism that lead to superstitious behavior. It has a list of senseless and arbitrary tenets that everyone must live by.

Hint for the future: If you believe in something you cannot prove and know cannot be proven then you are part of a religion just like any other. Oppressive, divisive, and cruel. Maybe not cruel to you, but cruel to somebody. Like a 6 year old boy.

In short, please stop kidding yourselves.

    • Baldev Singh

      Dear Nonsensei

you have a birthright to vent your feelings…You were not born into a Cult of Sikhism, You are a Homo Sapien who has come into the World to experience whatever you were meant to…What has and is happening is not your or our doing but ‘the game of the Creator’…Many ‘Sikhs’ have rebelled and have denounced many things, like their Parents and even the ‘faultless’ GURUS but never bothered to understand the message of the GURU…the HOUSE OF NANAK is the most successful HOUSE (ideology) ever! and every follower is fed and the Woman is exalted.Humanity is not that good at anything and it has left the World on the edge of oblivion! and so you can rest in peace that there will be no more Earth and no more Religion, just TRUTH.

  14. Dear Nonsensie
House of NAANAK inspires a person to enjoy infinite bliss of NAAM & nothing short of it , since every other thing /knowledge is nothing but politics in spirituality . SAT GURU NAANAK has not only talked as a teacher/preacher to the humanity but He has blessed us a big amount of LOAN , in the form of SIMRAN , from the MOST PRECIOUS treasure OF NAAM . He gave us the opportunity to land in this universe , in a sikh family, family tree of BABA NAANAK JEE .

He gave the shortest route to enjoy the BLISS OF NAAM & be free
& fearless in our life time . Khalsa enjoys the powers of LOVE of GOD .
This is little different from beloveds of LORD JESUS CHRIST/LORD KRISHNNA JEE/HAZRAT MOHAMAD SAHIB , since
their way of life is self centered or selfish gains of commercial bliss.
They try to understand/appreciate the meaning of the word BLISS after crossing over 50 years of age . By then , life has already passed whereas BABA NAANAK BLESSES HIS LOVE ( extra energy to feel fearless & bold to protect others ) to khalsa at a young age . If we ,as sikhs , feel depressed by the pressure of commercial world & find it difficult to survive , we must learn the art of falling in LOVE OF GURU GOBIND SINGH JEE MAHARAJ .
We have every right to demand each & everything from our beloved FATHER , since HE feels duty bound to answer our prayer .

Just imagine the plight of BHAGAT DHRUU JEE & PRAHLAD JEE , who faced great challenges even as a child to get NAAM but we are lucky to get it in just 18 days time.

Yes illiterate JAATS will find it difficult to understand all this but educated JAATS are at par with every other person .
I took a bet with an illiterate JAAT from Ludhiana ,” Who is more intelligent …
PHAPPA OR JAAT ? ” The JAAT BHAI said ,” BHAPPAS are more intelligent since they have the capacity to think 50 years ahead , whereas JAATS do not have that power to think beyond a few weeks/ year other than physical muscular power ”
I responded ,” Dear …You have forgotten to add that JAATS have greater intelligence than BHAPPAS since JAATS have respect for TRUE SAINTS, who have a vision of over 100 years ahead . Thus they enjoy their company & vision both ” . Whereas BHAPPAS have been advised by their knowledge master SANT SINGH MASKEEN JEE to remain away from SAINTS lest they attack on your DASWAND & loot you . This is where , they loose their wisdom , since they have succumbed to their foolish master .
So enjoy the LOVE of BABA NAANAK JEE ………….

    LOVE

    • Baldev Singh

      Dear Ajeet Singh

there is NO caste or jAAT OR ZAAT in the House of Nanak…this ‘disease’ of caste is Brahmin (Hindu) in origin and you must understand that Sikhs born outside South Asia have a chance to follow the HOUSE OF NANAK without duality, hypocrisy and a culture based on ‘boy child preference’ ‘Dowry’ ‘Honour Violence’ and caste based hatred….So please, before you mention GURU NANAK or GURU GOBIND SINGH ask this question: either THE HOUSE OF NANAK is TRUE when it rejects mindless and senseless caste, rituals, superstition.magic, dogma, sexism found in all ‘religions’ and Ideologies or it is False ? South Asians need the right mind set to follow the GURU truthfully and stop mostly caste based hatred and violence…In my own personal Household we follow GURU NANAK and not any culture or caste …We are all ONE RACE according to GURU NANAK and Scientists! and it is called HOMO SAPIEN where SAPIEN means ‘WISE’.
